What initially sparked your interest in volunteering for the CVHR?
My initial interest in CVHR was due to their work with survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault. In learning about the organization I found out that their free legal services are specific to civil representation, of which I did not have a lot of background understanding. I had just applied to law school and wanted to work somewhere to continue gaining experience and knowledge of legal services. CVHR mission statement stood out to me because of their mission to empower and advance the safety of victims through legal representation and educational outreach in the community.
What are you most excited to do or accomplish as a volunteer for the CVHR?
My main goal is to learn about the legal remedies that are in place for victims and to do outreach in the Indianapolis area to connect with other organizations and individuals that are doing work that is trauma informed and intersectional. I want to understand the legal processes that it takes to get a Protection Order and specifically the legal remedies that help children who are in families effected by DV.
What has been your favorite part about being a volunteer for the CVHR?
My favorite part has been going to really informative trainings and being a part of different taskforces and committees that are involved in Human Trafficking like IPATH. I have gained valuable knowledge and witnessed so many people who are doing really important work for survivors in our state. I also really enjoy hearing about the cases that the CVHR staff attorneys are working on.
What is the best vacation you’ve had?
I took a Girls Trip with 7 of my best friends from high school and college to New Orleans this past winter and it was a weekend of music, dancing, and the most amazing women I know. That type of energy is unmatched and New Orleans is like no other city in the US.
List the three words to best describe you:
Stubborn, inquisitive, bold
What book did you read last?
Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming.” She is a national/global icon and hero and her book was stunning. I highly recommend it to everyone, but especially women and women of color who so often have their experience left out of mainstream dialogue. Michelle touches on it all.
What did you want to be when growing up?
I wanted to be something new every week, I think. I started off wanting to be a dancer, then a National Geographic Photographer, then the President of the US, and then a food critic. I really just wanted some job that would allow me to travel a lot. Through all of those though I have wanted to be a lawyer and focus on civil rights activism, and have been active in politics, but dancing and eating food sounded like a lot more fun.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to ride my bike around the city when the weather is nice, and stay physically active through working-out, yoga, walking, etc. I also really enjoy music and always have something playing at any given time throughout the day, but I really like going to concerts to hear live artists, as well.
What is an ability you wish you had?
Well, if I had superpower abilities it would be to teleport or transform into anyone/anything.
What tv show/movie are you ashamed to admit you love?
I am not ashamed, but I have watched every episode since Grey’s Anatomy began 15 seasons ago.
