What initially sparked your interest in volunteering as an intern for the CVHR?
My goal is to become a human rights attorney, so I was looking for a way to be involved with a great cause as soon as possible instead of waiting another four years for my law degree. By interning for the CVHR, I am able to assist in outreach to victims who need support while also observing the legal side of how these types of crime and human rights victim cases are handled.
What are you most excited to do or accomplish as an intern for the CVHR?
I am most excited in spreading the word about the CVHR. When we attend events or fundraising opportunities, it’s so easy to connect with people who are interested in what we do, and you feel like you’re making a real difference. Sometimes we are able to reach individuals who may need our services, which is so important for victims who feel they don’t have a voice.
What has been your favorite part about being an intern for the CVHR?
My favorite part has been the actual courtroom proceedings. Not only am I able to assist our Outreach Coordinator in informing the public and reaching potential or current victims, I am able to see what our outreach accomplishes and see victims get the free legal aid they need to break free.
What is the best vacation you’ve had?
The best vacation I’ve ever been on was my senior year of high school Spring Break. We rented out a cabin in Ohio and it’s such an odd place to have an amazing time, but I was with my three best friends with s’mores and a hot tub, so what could be better?
Do you have a favorite quote?
“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
If I could be anyone in all of history, I would be Saundra Day O’Connor in the early 1980s when she was appointed as the first female justice to the U.S. Supreme Court. She not only had to fight the stigma of a woman in a man’s job, but she also fought her own colleagues to become the greatest in her field to eventually be on the Supreme Court. She is my inspiration and I would love to spend 24 hours in her shoes.
People would be surprised if they knew:
Before I became manager at Chick-fil-A, I used to be the cow mascot at every event and kid’s night! So, if you remember seeing the cow mascot in 2013/2014, it was most likely me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am currently a junior at IUPUI majoring in Political Science and Law in Liberal Arts. I hope to attend McKinney Law School in Fall 2019. I work at Walgreens as a pharmaceutical technician, which many comment as odd considering I want to become an attorney, but I love it and the people I work with.
Top 3 life highlights?
- My first nephew being born last September.
- Shaking Bernie Sanders’ hand.
- The next is a tie: Going to see my favorite musical, Hamilton, in Chicago last summer/Seeing my favorite artist, Ed Sheeran twice in the past few years (three times come October).
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I work and go to school full time and I intern with the CVHR, so I do not have a lot of spare time, believe it or not. I do love to volunteer with an organization called Girls Inc. located in Indianapolis. Whenever I can, I go to Bloomington where most of my best friends go to college. Also, I’m an avid Netflix binge-watcher.
